Description
Postcard depicts a full moon over the Liberty Life Building at night in Charlotte , NC . The moon is on the left hand side of the picture . [35 - Pub . by Dixie News Co. , Charlotte , NC – 71973 ; Tichnor Brothers ; color ; linen ; fine] Built in 1926/27 , the neoclassical style edifice has had many names , First National Bank Building , Liberty Life Building (1942) , Baugh Building (1964) , and Bank of North Carolina Center (1976) . Twenty-one stories high and located in the 100 block of South Tryon Street , it was designed by Louis Asbury , and briefly was the tallest building in the Carolinas and the tallest in Charlotte up until 1967 . On December 17 , 2007 , the Charlotte City Council designated the early skyscraper as an historic landmark . In 2007 , the building was converted to an office condominium and renamed to simply Tryon Plaza . Of historical note , on January 12 , 1948 , radio station WIST signed on from studios on the second floor of the building at the invitation of the Liberty Life Insurance Company .
