Description | This essay, written in 1886 by J. B. Alexander, expresses his views on eugenics and reproduction. Intermarriage and reproduction, Alexander claims, have not been monitored and managed, with the result that intellectual genetic capabilities have deteriorated. "If the State was as jalous [sic] of the physical and mental welfare of her citizens as the importance of the subject demands, she would devise some way by which to interdict the marriages and propagation of offspring, of the class of individuals who are unfit to successfully carry out the high behests of nature. Allowing only those who posess [sic] a sana mena in sana corpore to propagate the species." Alexander believed the same measures taken by those who raise livestock should be used on society to raise the quality of the breed. "Still I am fully persuaded in my own mind, that if it pays stock raisers to improve their breed of horses, cattle, sheep, hogs, etc, it certainly would pay the state to see to it that people affected with hereditary or self acquired diseases, whether of body or mind, rendering their offspring incapable of being useful citizens ... should not be permitted to continue a progeny that proves a source of weakness to the body politic, and of expense to tax-payers ... What a grand race of athletes and mental giants we would have to people our land, if only the survival of the highest type of manhood should be permitted to procreate the species." He stresses that purity of the blood line is key to maintaining the superiority of the white race. "Unadulterated blood is far superior to any cross, to accomplish the great purposes for which man was created ... The mixed races have never produced any great leaders who will at all compare with Caucassian [sic] celebrities in any of the learned professions or in the fine arts." |
