Transcription | "On Xmas day for 2,000 years, those who felt the bloom of youth with all the hallowed associations of the anniversary of the Babe of Bethlehem, we never get too old or too decrepted [sic] not to feel the joyes [sic] of Xmas time, for the wonderful blessings the Christ bestowed on us, for which we fervently pray we may ever be thankful. Let us not be too harsh in our judgement of others who do not celebrate the anniversary in the same way as we do. On Xmas day On Xmas day [sic] of 1862 - 45 years ago, Lane's Brigade were at camp Gregg, near Fredricksburg, Va when and where we had a big snow storm, and the boys determined to have some fun. We had five Regiments in our Brig. The 37th and 18th prepared for action, with martial music and banners flying in the breeze. After deploying in the woods and over the hills, soon came in sight of each other, when the Rebel yell was raised, and snow balls flew thick and fast. This very pantomine [sic] of battle, the shouting of the troops and the carying [sic] of the wounded, the surging back and fourth [sic], accompanied by loud huzzas [sic] represented a hard fought battle, only the musket and cannon were not used. Such was a sample of the fun we had in camp, but we lacked the smiles of those we loved and held dear, and we failed to partake of the good things that have been provided for us today. As some one has said, 'we are but grown up children,' for it often occurs to us with startling remembrance what we did on Xmas occasions in the long past. These happy anniversaries never fail to come on the appointed time, our invitation is extended. All things are made ready for our enjoyment. Our hostess meets us at the door to extend a most cordial welcome to all, high or low, so that they were members of that grand army of soldiers who were willing to lay down their lives for the rights of the states. To make a long story short, it was impossible for 600,000 men to whip 2,800,00; but we gave them the best fight the world ever saw, and our army did nothing that we are ashamed of, but we can always point with pride to the soldier who wore the gray." |
