Description | This letter was sent from Camp Mangum near Raleigh, N.C., New Year's Day, 1862. |
Transcription | "My dear wife, None of us knew how to appreciate good living while we were at High Point. There we fared sumptuously every day and when we reflect upon the pleasures we enjoyed while encamped there, we turn with loathing and disgust from our present location. At High Point we had many of the conveniences of home, here we have none. Many of our men have had next to nothing to eat since Monday morning. Fortunately for our mess we got two boxes of eatables on the cars with us. The rest was left at H.P. and we have not yet received them (Three days). Of cours [sic] we divide with those who have none. We are encamped on a very high hill with deep hollows on each side, we have a limited supply of branch water for drinking and as our cooking vesells [sic] have not yet come on from High Poin,t of course we do not cook any. We have no straw to put in our tents, nor plank to floor them, but I am in hopes our plank will be brought in sometime soon. A good number of the boys are carrying oak leaves to make beds of. My tent mates brought our ticks filled with straw with us, but the ground is very damp to put the beds on. Pine is the principle kind of wood that we burn, and we have it to cut and carry, so you may know that we will soon be as black & dirty as negroes. For the last three day [sic] I have frequently thought of Ezekiel Alexander [may have been referring to Eli Alexander, 1784-1834 or his son, Ezekiel, 1812-1875]. We have not got our wash pan yet, and you know I can not wash without one. I presume you have got the box of clothing we sent home by Billy Brown [William B. Brown?], and I think it quite probable I will send some more before we move again. It is a very hard matter to get our things along with us. Here after, we are not allowed to carry any thing with us only what we can carry on our backs and I can assure you it does not take much of a load to tire me down. Everyone says that I have fattened. I know that I have gained about 15 pounds but I am not as strong as I was before we left home. I have had the worst cold and the sorest throat I ever had in my life. My throat is well, but my cold is no better. I never apply to my nose but I receive a present. As soon as I finish this letter I will take a dose of salts. I have not taken a grain of medicine since I left home. I have never been sick with the cold. I have one more ailment to tell you of and I will quit. My ankles are about to give way. They are slightly swollen and feel every night as if they would not support my weight. I do not know the cause of it. I have not been drilling any for two weeks. When I am not walking or standing they feel comfortable enough. I suppose they will be well in a few days. If you send me a box or anything else, be sure to send it with some one coming directly to the camp. My love to you and Buddy [his son, Robert]. J. B. Alexander, Raleigh, N.C. 37th Reg. N.C.V. Comp. C." [There is a postscript from B. A. Johnston asking Mrs. Alexander to tells his folks, should she see them, that he is well.] |
