Description | This letter was written just before the troops moved from Camp Mangum in the Raleigh area to a site close to New Bern, N.C., the first week of January, 1862. |
Transcription | "My dear wife, I received two letters from you yesterday by John McCoy. Of course, I was glad to hear from you. Since I left home I have written to you twice each week, some of the letters sent by hand, others by mail, and I cannot tell why you have not received them. in our present camp, we have very poor mail facilities. We are four miles from Raleigh, and every thing is in an unsettled condition, no regular mail carrier. But I am glad to inform you that we leave here for Newbern [sic] today. I think it next to impossible to get to a worse place than this is. Everything this morning is bustle and confusion, preparing to leave for the coast. I suppose when we get to Newbern, we will be settled, at least for a while. I suppose when we get there we will be fed on fish, oysters, clams, etc. in abundance, and I am also in hope we will have better weather for camp life than we have had since we have been in Camp Mangum. Since last Saturday night we have been surrounded with ice. Our tents have been covered 1/2 an inch thick with ice for the last three days. You may know we fared well. I think the ice rendered our tents warmer. In my tent we have a walkway as passage about 15 inches wide runing [sic] through it. About the center of the tent we dug a hole about 12 inches square and filled it with coals from the cooking fire, and you have no idea how comfortable it made our house. I am writing now by the Capt.'s fire, an oven of coals. His is nothing like as warm as ours. During all the cold weather I have suffered very little except with cold feet. I am afraid that I will have some difficulty in carrying my cloths [sic] & bedding, but I am determined to leave nothing behind. I have no cloths to spare except two white shirts and one dress coat. If I have an oppertunity [sic] I will send some more home. I received the brandy you sent me by John McCoy, and very thankful to you for it. Everything here is in such terrible confusion, I will have to quit. I will write you again as soon as we get to Newbern and get fixed down. My love to you and Buddy [son, Robert]. J. B. Alexander." |
