Description | This long letter from J.B. Alexander to his wife, Ann, begins with an explanation and apology for comments he apparently made in previous letter(s) that made her think he was upset with her for not writing him. He maintains that he was just angry because the mail carriers failed to deliver them to the army camp. The next topic revolves around his children, Dixie and Robert. He inquires about their health and whether Dixie had been weaned. He is concerned that Ann needed to put on weight before summer. Affairs of the harvest and subsequent sales, slave labor, and an extended family member, "Aunt Margaret L." are discussed. |
Transcription | Partial transcription: "On yesterday, I rode up to Hamilton's Crossing to report to Dr. Guild, Medical Director for the A. N. V. and he assigned me to duty as Surg. of the 37th NCT. My appointment will date from Jan. 31st. I hope that whoever is appointed asst. surgeon in the Reg. will be a man not afraid to work. In ordinary times I would rather not have an asst. but by having one I can sometimes get [away] from camp, [to] home occasionaly [sic] perhaps. Tell Dave to have me a brace of silver stars made if he can buy two silver quarter-dollars. Tell him Capt. Nicholson failed to get the cloth he went to Richmond after, but was promised that some of the cloth should be sent to Capt. Oats. A suit of it will cost $22, that is simply the cloth. It is very handsome [sic] goods, if it comes I intend to have a suit off of it. I saw a man from Wilkes county today who told me that negroes sold in his county at from [$]1800 to $2700, ordinary field hands. I would like to part with Bob at the last price, and invest the money in land or cheaper negroes. You did not say in your letter whether I got that tract of land or not, I would like to know. If not, I wish to purchase either negroes or land and not keep confederate script lying idle. If cousin Martha Goodman has not sold her cotton I wish you could buy it, so as she could lift the note I hold on her. This is her best time to pay it & you might give her a cent or two over the market price to induce her to let you have it. I think she made two bales, try and get both and pay her what is over the note & interest. If she has done sold it, see if she can pay you anything on the note. At this time there is a brigade court marshal in session in this Reg. A large number of cases are to be tried, and I fear that some of them will be shot, one from our county, Dal. Maxwell. There is one to be shot in Pender's Brigade next Monday, in the 38th NCT. Our men who have over stayed their furloughs without a valid excuse, are being treated rather roughly. I would like for Dave to stay as long at home as it is necessary if he can get permission. I can do without him here for the present. The news from the North-west is still of the right sort. I wish how big a fuss may be raised in old Abe's family. Did Aunt Martha get my letters? I have not heard from B. A. Johnston in a month. I wish he was out of the service. My love to you & babies. J. B. Alexander [ps] guess how you spelt 'a poultice'?" |
