Description | This letter was sent from J.B. Alexander to his wife, Mrs. Dr. J. B. Alexander on December 29, 1861. In his letter, Dr. J. B. Alexander informs Mrs. Alexander that he will be in a temporary camp near Raleigh, but he is uncertain of the location of his long-term orders. He also states that the men of his company are in good health. Dr. Alexander expresses his concern for reports he received of misbehavior of slaves at his home property and he offers advice to Mrs. Alexander about the situation. The envelope containing the letter is addressed, "Mrs. Dr. J. B. Alexander, Cowan's Ford, Mecklenburg Co. N. Carolina." |
Transcription | "My dear wife, Contrary to my expectations we are still at High Point. All the Regiment is gone except our company, and two others, and we will leave tomorrow certain. I feel rather loth [sic] to leave our old encampment for fear we get to a worse place, but that is not my buisness [sic], we only have to obey orders. Quite a number of our men got back last night. Mr. Fidler told me about the Christmass [sic] frolic of Bob & John. I want Billy to tie them both and give them at least fifty lashes well put on, but should he decline doing it, get Frank Blythe to execute the sentence; and if that does not answer get W. [?] Potts' smith [blacksmith] to make a yoke for each one of them, for I am determined to either kill or cure them of their run away propensities. Do not talk to Billy in such a manner that he would be insulted so as to leave you, for I suppose he has been and will be very kind to you. Such a person will be of more service to you in my abscence [sic], than if he was more strict with the negroes and less kind to you. I received the articles you sent me last night by Mr. Fidler. The comfort you sent me was pronounced in camp today to be the most elegant piece of hand work that has appeared in High Point. The truth is it is too nice to wear hear [sic] in the smoke and dirt. The tobacco was very acceptable. I have quite a low stock on hands [sic] at present. The cap, I am sorry you sent it to me, I swaped [sic] my old one to John McCoy for his, and have since received one from Jeff Davis and as you [illegible] the making of it, I think I had better sell it, what did it cost you? Except the rim, it is quite hansom [sic], but nothing to compare to the comfort you knit for me. I had the pleasure of calling on Mrs. Col. Barber [sometimes spelled 'Barbour'] last Wednesday. She used to be Miss Amanda [?] Alexander of D. [Davidson] College. She is still here with her children. Except her and Sarah Jane I have not spoken to a lady since I left Charlotte. The health of our company is pretty good at present, some five or six are grunting, but not much the matter. It is generaly [sic] supposed that we will stay at the camp near Raleigh but a short time, but no one knows where we will be sent. I think it quite probable we will be ordered to port Royal S.C. but I suppose it will be all right wherever they send us. You may direct your letter to me in care of 'Capt. Potts. 37th Reg. Camp Mangum' near Raleigh. Be sure you put the number of the Regiment. That is the most information I can give you now as to my address. Yours as ever J.B. Alexander. [ps] Capt. Potts learns [sic] that some of the artickles [sic] that Robt. Hunter had for the company have been received, and 8 or 10 pairs of socks, but no bed cloths, quilt or whatever it was. He says that it will probably be best to say no more about it. You know Lieut. Wilson's wife & Bob Hunter's wife are sisters so you see it would be a delicate matter for Capt. Potts to fuss about. J.B. Alexander." |
