Description | This letter from Camp Fisher, near High Point, N.C., is from J. B. Alexander to Ann, his wife. |
Transcription | "My dear wife, I wrote you a note a few days since, at which time I was very busy. On last Friday, the Surgeon went to Col. Lee and had me appointed Stewart [sic] of the hospital without my consent, and as a matter of course I would not accept it. The Surgeons appeared perfectly delighted with geting [sic] me to aid them, but they looked rather blue when I told them that I would not stoop to the office of Stewart; so I remain with the company. There has been several deaths in the Reg. since I came back. John Barnet [sic], of our company, has been lying very bad for the last six days. [The soldier referred to could have been John D. or John W. Barnette, both of whom were from Mecklenburg County, and had enlisted before this letter was written] I have attended him very closely, and I now think with great care he may get well. John Bear [sic] jr is sick, I suppose taking measles [sometimes referred to as Army Rubella]. I intend having them both moved to the hospital today. The rest of the boys are pretty well. Our Major preached yesterday in camp. [Probably referring to Maj. John G. Bryan, an Alexander County pastor] He is not acquainted with the first principles of grammar, and his pronunciation is worse than Henry's. I felt mortified that we had such a man for major. I suppose you have killed your hogs, if not do so as soon as possible. I have not heard yet whether Davy has got home with the salt, let me know about his trip. Tell Billy not to pasture the old bottom, only when the ground is hard frozen. I tried to get a cap rim in Charlotte, but they had none, only ready made rims stiched [sic] with coarse white yarn at fifty cts each, so I bought none. I sent the ginger & plates [?] to Alderson's store by Ed Johnston. My love to you and baby [infant son, Robert] . J. B. Alexander [ps] Address me at High Point, N.C. 37th Reg. Comp. C." |
