Transcription | "My dear wife, as I have written to you so frequently my letters will not be very interesting. We hear no news in camp. I have not heard from James since I left Charlotte. When I left him I thought his case extremly [sic] doubtful. The health of our regiment is very good; four of our company are in the hospital; all four have the measles and are doing very well. John Bell was very sick before the measles came out. [Measles was a very common but serious disease during the Civil War, sometimes known as Army Rubella] You can tell cousin Malissa that he is doing well. He is under my care exclusively, in fact I have charge of all our boys, and I have them well attended. John is in fine spirits. I intend to try and get all our sick sent home in a few days, as soon as they can go with safty [sic]. The other Surgeon for our Regiment was appointed last week, he had Ex-Govenor [sic] Bragg to interceed [sic] for him. Neither of our surgeons stood an examination, but got their appointments by having influential men to interceed for them. Our Assistant Surgeon is now absent attending the convention in Raleigh, and I have been appointed in his place untill [sic] he returns. I have been treated with marked courtsy [sic] by the Surgeons of both Regiments. So far I have had an easy time of it. Our men are in great glee at the prospect of getting Col. Lee for Col. of our Regiment. Capt. Potts is worthy of all praise for the manner in which he has acted. He has been offered the office of Lt. Col. if he would vote against Lee, but he declined the honor like a true patriot, and by this magnanimus [sic] act we will get Lee for our Col. I never saw such a place for log rolling [logrolling or trading for favors] in my life. Nearly all the Capts. are wanting to be promoted except Monroe and it is my opinion that the Office of Major will be forced on him [possibly referring to Daniel A. Monroe Capt. Co. K. 38th N.C. Regt. born March 20, 1829, Died Sept. 24, 1863]. The election is expected to come off now everyday. Bob Oats [sic] and my self have been on duty but once, and that time he did nearly all the work. I had an introduction to Col. Leventhrop this morning. He is Col. of the Regiment W. R. Myers is in. He is six feet 7 inches. You will know better about sending for salt than I do. I have heard that there is some danger of the Tories and Yankees about the salt works, but I can not vouch for the truth of the rumor, so you must act according to your own judgment. Those of our men who have been so homesick have concluded to take it easy, and now say very little about it. We all hire our washing, get it done at five cents a piece, collars, towels, etc done gratis. We generally keep pretty clean. I will be at home as soon as I can get off, which will not be untill our Surgeon returns. My love to you and buddy [his son, Robert], J. B. Alexander. p.s. Tell cousin Malissa [sic] not to fret about John, he is getting on finely. J.B.A." |
