Description | This letter, from Mrs. Alfred Livingston in Kentucky, was a request for information from J.B. Alexander. She was trying to complete a family history which would show that she was eligible for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution. Some of her ancestors were from the Piedmont of N.C. and she apparently felt that Alexander would be able to provide answers to her various questions. The envelope had two one-cent stamps (green, Benjamin Franklin). It was addressed to Dr. J. B. Alexander, Historian, Charlotte, North Carolina. |
Transcription | "My dear sir, I write asking a favor of you as you have had opportunity to know so many facts connected with the lives of the honored dead who were ancestors and relatives of ancestors of mine. My great grandfather, Robert Hope who was a ruling elder in Poplar Tent Church for many years, married a Miss Catherine Allison. I write asking if you could tell me her parents' names? [Hugh and Margaret Allison] Here are the signatures of witnesses to my g. grandfather Hope's will: John Allison, Thomas Allison, Ste. Alexander, John Gilmer. This was signed in 1804. One of his daughters (Margaret) married an Alexander. Now I have another question which I would like very much to know the answer. Which Robert Harris was my great great grandfather? I mean in what way was he connected with the Revolutionary War. Did he sign the Mecklenburg Declaration? [Note: Some historians claim it was Richard Harris who signed the document, others believe it was Robert Harris] Was he the Ruling Elder of the Poplar Tent Church? Robert Harris, b. Oct. 4, 1731, Margaret Harper, b. Aug. 17, 1731 [some genealogical records show birth year as 1731] [m.] Oct. 19, 1757. Their children are as follows [:] James Harris, b. Oct. 19, 1758; Garnett [sic][Harris] [b.] Aug. 6, 1761; Oliver [Harris] [b.] Sept. 20, 1763; John [Harris] [b.] Feb. 15, 1766 my g. grandfather; Margaret [Harris] [b.] Sept. 19, 1781; May [sic] [Harris] [b.] Feb. 12, 1768; Moses W. [Harris] [b.] Jan. 12, 1770; Robert [Harris] [b.] Dec. 20, 1772; Samuel [Harris] [b.] Jan. 3, 1776; Thomas & Hannah [Harris] [b.] Feb. 15, 1779. John Harris & Rachel Gingles were married. Their children were as follows: Gingles Harris, b. Dec. 20, 1787; Margaret [Harris] [b.] Feb. 8, 1790; John [Harris] [b.] April 30, 1792; Milton [Harris] [b.] June 24, 1794 [? - some genealogical records show birth year as 1805]; Gennett [sic] [Harris] [b.] July 25, 1796; Rosy [Harris] [b.] Aug. 6, 1797; Elam [Harris] [b.] Aug. 3, 1800; Jane Malissa [Harris] [b.] July 14, 1802; Edward L. [Harris] [b.] Nov. 28, 1804; Ephraim H. [Harris] [b.] Sept. 19, 1807; Charles Haywood [Harris] [b.] Oct. 13, 1809. I have given you these names hoping you may aid me in determining what part my ancestor Robert Harris took in the Revolutionary War. I will appreciate so much if you will aid me in this matter. I have also tried to find out what service Robert Hope gave to the Revolution. Levi Hope, my grandfather & youngest son of Robert Hope of Poplar Tent Church was representative to state legislature in 1835 [Cabarrus County]. He married Jane Malissa Harris. Thanking you in advance for any consideration you may give me, I am respectfully Mrs. Alfred Livingston, Henderson, Ky. N.B. [nota bene or note well the following] The reason I am so desirous to know these things, I wish to join the D. A. Rs. I have filled out my papers as a descendant through my mother from Captain Nathaniel & Captain John Jefries [sic] of South Carolina. I am a descendant from Wilkins side from the Terrells of Culpepper County, Va. I mention again the questions I am so eager to know the answers: 1. Which Robert Harris was my grandfather (great great) [?] 2. Who were the parents of Catherine Allison who married Robert Hope of Cabarrus Co. N.C.? 3. What service did Robert Hope (who was 25 years of age in 1775) give during Revolutionary war? You have no idea how much help you will do us, if you can answer the above questions and I shall never cease to appreciate the great favor. Mrs. Livingston." |
