Description | This letter was written by Dr. J. B. Alexander and sent to his wife, Ann, on July 6, 1862. Writing from a location "25 miles below Richmond" Dr. J. B. Alexander describes the large number of discarded weapons as well as his uncertainty about the regiment's casualties following the Seven Days Battles between General George B. McClellan's Union Army of the Potomac and General Robert E. Lee's Confederate troops. On one side of the correspondence is the address, "Mrs. Dr. J. B. Alexander, Alexandriana, Mecklenburg Co., N.C." and there are two five-cent Confederate Stamps picturing Jefferson Davis. They appear to be from the 1861 stamp issue. "McLelland" most likely refers to General George B. McClellan, who famously organized the Army of the Potomac, the Union Army's premier fighting force. |
Transcription | "Dear Wife, I am in great hopes that the fighting is over. McLelland [sic] has been whiped [sic] every day for 6 or 7 days in suscession [sic]. He was driven from every position that he took. This morning we found 3000 stand of arms his men had thrown away. [One stand of arms represented a complete set of weaponry issued to a soldier, for example, a musket, bayonet, cartridge box and belt; but frequently, it was just the musket and bayonet alone.] I think the enimy [sic] have reached their gun boats; but we know nothing that is going on, only what is done in our division. Our men are worn out, we only have 15 with us of our company, the rest have been sent back to camp. Company K of our Reg. has but one man with us; we have 170 in the Reg. I do not know how many of our camp were killed. I know nothing about our sick. I hear [sic] from Houston just before the fighting began, but have not heard of him since. I have been Asst. Surgeon since last Sunday, on last Monday night I worked all night with the wounded. A field hospital is an awful place. I rode over the Battle of [?] Tuesday, it was a terrible scene. I will write you more when I have a chance. I have written 3 times this week. J. B. Alexander [ps] I have heard nothing from the petition." |
