Description | This letter was written by J. B. Alexander to his wife, Ann, in January of 1862. It was written when he was with troops at Camp Tadpole, near New Bern, N.C. |
Transcription | "My dear wife, I have just received your letter of the 15th inst. which was very acceptable. On last Thursday night I received the box you sent me, containing a letter which I was glad to get & also a bundle of tobacco which I needed very much. The other articles were in fine condition. The beef tongue I divided with J. L. Jetton as he was going to guard a bridge about four miles from camp. A box now and then is very acceptable. And as for you not receiving letters from me, all I can say is that I write to you twice every week, and sometimes oftener. Our mail agent is not always what he should be, frequently drunk. I am sorry you have the measles at home on your account. If Budy [their young son Robert] should have measles immediatly [sic] it woul [sic] be best, so that he would be well before you are sick. However I fully expect to be at home at that time and we can manage as circumstances may require. I think you would do well to get Uncl. Elie[?] to advise & talk with Billy occasionaly [sic] as he would have more influence than any one else. I suppose that you have heard before this time that the Burnside fleet was threatning [sic] Newbern [sic]. Our artillery men at the different batteries and forts in this neighborhood have been looking for the fleet up here for the last two days; we have heard that they were in Pamlico Sound, about 20 miles from us; whether they will come or not I do not know (or care). I would like to see some fighting as I am here. I think we are sufficiently prepared to whip them. I went yesterday to see Thompson's Battery 2 miles from our camp. It is a masked battery, with excellent guns, 64 pounders, rifled cannon. They have 13 guns mounted. There are four such batteries near us, also a breast work one mile in length for infantry, [A masked battery is so placed as not to be seen by an enemy until it opens fire.] Consequently we have little to fear, only we fear the Yankees will never come to Newbern. The city was in a terrible state of excitement on last Friday when they got news of the fleet being in the mouth of the Neuse. I have not seen Mr. Fidler since last Monday. He is in the hospital at Newbern. I expect he is getting pretty well, as he has never been confined to bed. J. S. Johnston [sic?] is still quite unwell, and unless he improves very soon I will try and have him sent home. [The name may have actually been spelled Johnson, there was a James S. Johnson who resigned shortly after this letter was written and sent home due to illness.] I think he is taking typhoid fever, but do not let his folks know it. A good many of our boys are complaining but none of them bad cases. John Bell says tell his people he is well. All of the boys from our section are well except. D. Fidler. I am now going to try to get a pass to go to the county to get dinner. Mr. Alison Black has an invitation to dine, and has asked me to go with him, but I fear we will not get passes. I will write you again in a few days. My love to you and budy. J. B. Alexander. [ps] The reason I do not prepay my letters is I am afraid the mail agent will steal the money. J.B. Alex___" |
