Two documents are included: a bill-of-sale and a receipt. The "Fortification at Halifax" mentioned in the documents may refer to Camp Winslow, a Confederate post located in that area.

"We the undersigned having been called upon to value a negro boy called Mark belonging to R. D. Alexander and conscripted by the state do approve the boy at twenty-two hundred dollars. Charlotte, Apr. 25, 1863. [signed] Rob't Davidson, [illegible] Harris, [illegible] Orr." and "Rec'd of R. D. Alexander one negro boy named Mark aged 23[?] to be sent to work on fortification at Halifax by order of the law. Apr. 25, 1863. [signed] [illegible] Williams, Col. 85 Reg."
