Description | This correspondence from Charlotte, N.C was written and sent by J.H.M. Cammon [?] to Carrie Brevard (Dixie) Alexander. The letter, which is dated July 30, 1885, discusses a recent trip to the Alexander family and Cammon is writing to update J.B. Alexander's daughter, whom he refers to as "Miss Dixie" on his life following the trip. |
Transcription | "I arrived here safe last Tuesday and found a quantity of work piled up for me and I have been kept quite busy catching up. Of all the short vacations that I have ever spent, I do not remember any one that was spent more pleasantly than the few days at your home and I certainly brought no visit to a close more reluctantly than this one. To each individual member of the family I am indebted for my pleasure. There were quite a number of very serious accidents in Charlotte during my absence, one or two persons being killed by lightning and a Mr. Eagle having his leg broken. I wish you would ask Dr. Annie if she will kindly let me have three or four of those little rocks that she has been coughing up, as I should like to have them analyzed. [Likely to have been referring to Tonsilloliths, or tonsil stones] If your sister will let me have them, you can send them to me in your next letter. I have not seen anything of Mr. & Mrs. [illegible] since my return but I guess that can be accounted for my being busy and confined so close to the office. I weighed as soon as I got home and found that I had gained four pounds. You remember I told you that I thought I had gained five pounds. Please say to Miss Lucy that I looked all through the music store today for the piece of music she wanted and could not get it. Tell her that I have been whistleing [sic] 'Barney' ever since I got home. [Possibly referring to a popular song of that era, "Barney, Take Me Home"] I had Mr. Wriston to send the Thapsia Plaster that your father wanted and hope it will arrive safe. Have you decided when you will make your visit to Mr. Baxter Caldwell's? Mr. Van Landingham had quite a healthy laugh when I told him that Miss Lucy and myself got lost that night, he says he expects that we were not paying much attention the the roads. I found the little piece of Hart [also spelled Heart] leaf in my pocket book and have written 'Forest Home, July 27, 1885' on it and will preserve it as a memento. I also have that card that your sister wrote 'remember my luck' etc. on. You can tell her that I am not likely to forget it. It is time to close the store so I will ask you to excuse short letter and try to do better next time. Please remember me to all the family and also to Roberts [sic] and his wife. Say to your mother that I feel as though I could stand about four glasses of that delightful cider this moment. Hoping to hear from you soon. I am your sincere friend, J. H. M. Cammon [?] [ps] I have given the order for that picture." |
