Description |
Written November 4, 1909, upon the occasion of Dixie Alexander's death, this note of condolence is from one of her former teachers at a school in the Bethel Community, L. K. Glasgow to her father, J. B. Alexander. Glasgow tells of his deep sorrow and that of all those in the community who knew and loved Carrie Brevard Alexander (Dixie). "My very dear fried: I write to express feelings of a very tender nature that have been seeking expression since we learned of your severe bereavement." He speaks of his fondness for her siblings, also, Robert, Sam, James, Annie, and Lucy and of the close relationship between a teacher and pupil, "I learned how closely related the teacher is to his pupils - he is in a very sense their father, not merely "in loco parentis." The joy is the same, if they honor him by becoming noble men & women; the grief is the same, if they cause his cheek to blush when they go wrong." He closes with a note of Christian compassion, "Our God can comfort you & all your house." The letter was sent from Davidson, N.C., to Charlotte with two cents postage. |
