Description |
This is a receipt for a total of $9.47 given to J. B. Alexander from the firm, Fisher & Heinitsh in Columbia, S.C. Items purchased included, "Ipacac [sic], laudanum, gum opium, camphor, sal arotous [sic], gum aloes, gum morphine, pink root, quinine, castor oil, hartshorn, syrup of squills, and blue mass." Hartshorn was used as a source for ammonia and smelling salts; pinkroot was used to treat intestinal parasites; saleratus was used in antacids; blue mass was mercury and other ingredients in syrup or pill form used to treat a wide range of complaints such as tuberculosis, constipation, toothache, parasites, and pain of childbirth; and syrup of squills was used as an expectorant. Fisher & Heinitsh were "dealers in drugs, medicines, chemicals, perfumery, dye-stuffs, acids, surgical instruments, etc." It was owned and operated by E.H. Heinitsh and W.C. Fisher in Columbia, S.C. This receipt, dated April 7, 1854, was for items Alexander may have needed in his studies at the Medical School in Columbia. He graduated from there the following year. |
