Description | Entitled "Insane Negros" this document is a handwritten editorial or essay by J.B. Alexander on the back of his personal letterhead. On the one side is "Dr. J. B. Alexander, author of History of Mecklenburg County. Charlotte, N.C., __________ 190_." In the corner is an excerpt from a book review, "'The history of Mecklenburg County from 1740 to 1900' is the title of a book of 431 pages, by Dr. J. B. Alexander. The Doctor has a vivid recollection of the stirring times in which his life has been spent. This book is another valuable contribution to the history of the State. -- Charlotte Observer, February 16, 1903." There are no handwritten comments on this side of the paper. On the verso, however, are Alexander's opinions about the mental health of the freedman. There are many comments about the care and attention slaves received before their emancipation and how they did not take the transition to freedom well. "They (slaves) were well cared for, but had no cares of their own. Since their freedom every restraint has been loosed, and they were willing followers of the baser sort of white men. The Negro is not a leader or a reformer, but always a follower, and most always it is on a down grade. A large hospital for the colored insane has been built in Goldsboro; it is now full and not one half the insane is cared for." (In 1880, the "Asylum for Colored Insane" opened in Goldsboro, N.C.. Over the years, there have been several name changes: The Eastern North Carolina Insane Asylum, Eastern Hospital, and State Hospital at Goldsboro. In 1959, the name was changed to Cherry Hospital.) Alexander also shares his philosophy on the physical health of the freed black man. "In slavery times the Negro was exempt from insanity or a diseased mind, but were peculiarly liable to typhoid fever. For twenty-five years, or the last quarter of the 19th century, I have not seen a case. I do not pretend to give the solution of their immunity, but in my observation it is a fact." Some of the ideas in this essay were also found in Alexander's "Reminiscences of the Past Sixty Years." |
