Remarks of Kelly M. Alexander, President North Carolina State Conference of Branches National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Ministers' Conference of the 17th Annual State Convention Greensboro, N. C, October 13, 1960 The Officers and Members of the North Carolina State Conference of Branches join me in extending to you our deep appreciation for taking time out of your busy activities to attend this Ministers' Conference, which is a permanent project of the North Carolina State Conference of NAACP Branches, We welcome you and we know that your presence here today is representative of your sincere desire to strengthen our democratic way of life. It is encouraging to see Church leadership deeply interested in the problem of human relations as between man and man, as between group and group, between majorities and minorities. We welcome you because of your understanding of the great task of building a genuine Democratic society here in North Carolina which is fundamentally a religious task. We welcome you because you believe in the Lordship of Christ and your realization of your responsibility to God and to one another to face together your common problems of life. We also welcome you because you believe in the objective and purpose of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and you are willing to work for social justice and equality. You are teaching both races to think with the mind of God and love with the heart of Christ, that laws be obeyed, authority respected and peace established, Zou are teaching our people not to be filled with bitterness, but to (cultivate an understanding of the difficulties involved when our white brother attemps to overcome intellectual habits and inbred prejudice, I sometimes think the church in North Carolina is bewildered and confused. The church is confronted by those who want to change and open its doors to all, irrespective of race or color and there are those who resist any change whatsoever, this of course, results in churchmen being divided
