August 8, 1989 RE: The Political Action Committee The Political Action Committee met on Tuesday, August 8, 1989 at 6:30 p.m. at Alexander Funeral Home. Chairman Alfred L. Alexander presided. Kelly Alexander, Jr. presented the format to us concerning the "Demonstration March" to be held in Washington, D.C. on August 26, 1989. We were informed of all of the details he had available so we could share this with other NAACP members and interested persons. There will be buses leaving here on August 25 to arrive in Washington on the 26th. The departure time was not available at the time, but he will find out and inform us later. The cost of the trip is $40.00 per person. It was requested that everyone use checks for payment, made payable to New Horizons Travel Limited. It was also suggested that men wear something and women wear something but no one will be rejected for not having on these specific colors. There will be day rooms provided upon arrival in Washington, for 'freshening up1 or for changing clothes. If anyone needs any additional information concerning this trip, you may contact Ken Snow at (704)376-6909 between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m. Officers were elected to serve on the committee as follows: Chairman - Alfred L. Alexander Co Chairman - Rev. Cordy Hobbs, Jr. Secretary - Denise P. Wilson Alfred had collected various forms and information for the group to look over and review concerning precincts, candidates, and voters. Beverly provided us with some figures on the purged voters in the Black communities, along with the approach she used to find out about households without registered voters in Precinct #60. She checked the Registered Voter list against the City Directory for certain sheets. With this information, she and her group, along with a registrar, will screen the area and hopefully get some people registered or re-registered. Beverly or Grace will be providing us with e list of the precincts that are currently not organized. We are aware that Enderly Park is one of those, so we chose to help get that one organized this year. It was the general concensus of the group to only take on one precinct at a time, and to just play it by ear about helping any of the others with their organization. We all decided to "walk" the Enderly Park community on Saturday, August 19, 1989 from 8;30 a.m. to 11;30 a.m. We will meet at Mt.Carmel Baptist Church at 8;00 a.m. Maxine will check with the church officials to get their approval to use the church parking lot. Beverly will check the City Directory for that area against the Registered Voter list, and provide us with information needed for the walk as far as streets we'll cover and the houses we'll visit. Alfred will try to arrange for us to have a registrar(s) go along with us. We will wear some type of name tag or badge to identify ourselves, which Alfred will provide. We are soliciting community churches and residents to help us in this drive. Don will be contacting Rev. Gilmore, John Hancock, Rick Hall and Dorothy Miller about assisting us. Beverly will be contacting Ahmad for any help he can provide.
