Wages #kt wesi Alfred K. wt\iiefiead September 17, 1996 Dear Branch President: As you know, the opinion polls and political pundits predict that the women's vote - especially that of low-income working women - will be the deciding factor in this fall's election. Together we can empower women to make a difference! As part of the AFL-OO's political agenda this year, the Working Women's Department is launching a special effort to reach out to working women. The campaign is entitled Working Women Vote. We'll be working with labor, religious and community-based organizations - hopefully, including the NAACP - to reach out to working women in more than 100 cities. What You Can Expect Working Women Vote materials are available, including: brochures, buttons/stickers, posters and flyers. Some materials are available in both English and Spanish. A brochure, lapel sticker and order form are enclosed. What We Would Like From You The centerpiece of our campaign is a concentrated week of activities from October 5-11, 1996, to reach out to working women voters. The AFL-CJO will coordinate events in scores of cities - for example, giving out pieces of a huge cake (courtesy of the Bakery, Confectionary and Tobacco Workers Union) to women in the downtown public square on lunch hour who register to vote or sign a pledge to vote. We encourage you to include our material in any special event that reflect your membership. Our material is being used by civil rights organizations sponsoring The Ron Brown Heritage Bus Tour, that is registering people to vote in southeastern cities where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spearheaded initiatives for non-violent social change. We would also appreciate knowing if your branch has a get-out-the-vote (GOTV) program. We would like to contact you in late October to assess whether our material was useful to your campaign. It is important to demonstrate our commitment to working women and their power to make a difference. Help us by planning one or more outreach events as part of Working Women Vote For more information, please contact Allegra P. McManus in the AFL-CIO Working Women's Department at 202/637-5239 or 202/508-6902 (fax). We look forward to working with you. UuJU^ Sincerely, Karen Nussbaum, Director Working Women's Department Richard Womack, Director Civil & Human Rights Department Chair, Labor Committee NAACP Board of Directors -HSfetx
