Address of Kelly M. Alexander, President North Carolina State Conference of Branches, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People before the 13th Annual Convention of the North Carolina State Conference of NAACP Branches- in Winston-Salem, N.C., October Z05 1956 The North Carolina State Conference of Branches, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, appreciate very highly the invitation from the Winston«Salem Branch to hold its 13th Annual Convention in this North-Central section of the North Carolina piedmont. It is really fascinating to meet in a city with a Negro Alderman, a famous insurance company owned and operated by progressive community leaders, a noteworthy educational institution, a very active branch of the association and many churches that are serving the needs of this community. The progress you are making in this great industrial and important manufacturing center gives us an exalted conception of the great leadership you have for the constructive advancement of the total community. This is also the home of our hard working field secretary, Charles McLean, a dedicated worker in the field of civil rights. The Winston-Salem Branch under the leadership of men like Rev. Kelly O.P. Goodwin, minister of this church; Dr. P.M. Brandon, your present President, Mr. Cortez Furysar, to name only a few, have contributed much toward the gains made on the civil rights front. We deeply appreciate the hospitality extended us during this convention and will cherish in our memory every kind act to make our stay most enjoyable. We congratulate Attorney Oliver Denning and the entire convention committee of the Winston-Salem Branch for an excellent job done. I also want to pay my respects this morning to every officer of this association on the state and local levels and the entire membership in North Carolina for the leadership and fellowship they have given the NAACP in the administration of its program,, You rightfully deserve and have the widespread admiration and confidence of more citizens in this state than you may realize. I am confident that I express the sentiment of every delegate in stating to our national office staff our appreciation for taking time out of busy and pressing schedules to be with us at this time. We thank all the participants on our convention program for assisting the state conference to make this a most successful convention. We are meeting here on this occasion to work out ways and means to secure civil rights and speed up the desegregation of the public schools in North Carolina.
