CHARLOTTE MECKLENBURG CO. NAACP "PEACE IN THE STREETS" May 14, 1995 - September 3, 1995 The goal of this campaign is to reduce the number of violent incidents involving African Americans in the 13 to 25 age group through the provision of recreational and educational activities. To facilitate this process the NAACP will coordinate with other community based organizations, the Mecklenburg Co. Parks & Recreation Department and the business community. One of the primary target groups of these activities will be individuals engaged in the spontaneous activity of "cruising". The events identified as part of the NAACP campaign are: Peace In the Streets Parade of Vehicles; Keep The Peace Concerts & Dances; Keep the Peace Amateur Nights; The Young Ladies Of Summer Beauty Contest and The Peace In the Streets Leadership Institute. PEACE IN THE STREETS PARADE OF VEHICLES Parades will be held Sunday, May 14, 28; June 11, 25; July 16, 30; August 6, 20 with a concluding event the weekend of September 3. The proposed parade route is: N. Tryon Street (29/49) to S. Tryon Street (49); left onto Woodlawn Road; right onto South Boulevard (521); left onto Tyvola Road; straight into Fairview Road; left onto Providence Road; right onto Wendover, straight to Eastway; turn onto North Tryon then proceeding to site of evening event. Parades would start at 4:00 PM and take approximately 90 minutes and end at a concert/dance site. Participating drivers will register their vehicles in order to be judged. The three winners of the eight weekly parades (24 vehicles) will be voted on through a public process and announced as part of the September 3 weekend closing activities. Prizes will be given to the winners. KEEP THE PEACE AMATEUR NIGHTS One Saturday night per month dedicated to amateur performances in the areas of dance, rap, individual and group musical performances. Targeted ages 13 - 15. 1
