Dennis, Isaac N., 1823-1910 Torrance, Richard Allison, 1833-1927 |
Description | This tiny, embossed envelope contains 3 visiting cards (visite biletes) or calling cards (Also called social cards or scrap calling cards where the embossed section of envelope lifts to reveal name on card). Visiting cards gave tangible evidence of meeting social obligations. These cards are the size of our contemporary business cards. The blank or address-side of the envelope says, "Mr. Torrance Present." The flap-side of the envelope has an ornate black-on-white design. One card is engraved, "R. A. Torrence" (Note the difference in spelling between the envelope and card). The second card says, "Col. I. N. Dennis" and the third is imprinted, "Episcopal Church, Richmond. Wednesday Evening, May 3d, 1865 at 8 o'clock." Although the state in which Richmond is located is not specified, other items with which the cards were associated suggests that it could be Richmond, Texas, which is in Fort Bend County. The complete name of the church is also not revealed, but one possibility, based on the age of current Episcopal Churches in that area, could be Calvary Episcopal Church. |
