April 24, 1962 Mr. J. Carlton Fleming Fleming, Robinson and Bradshaw Johnston Building Charlotte 2, North Carolina My dear Mr. Fleming: Due to your in and out engagements and mine as well, I have not succeeded in having an opportunity to discuss with you a matter of some importance which I had in mind when I called last week. I find that you are out today and I must be out tomorrow, so it will be Ihursday at least before we can attempt to arrange a visit. Let me state what I have in mind with the hope that you may be thinking of it between now and that time. The Mayor and I are earnestly hoping that it will be possible for you to assume the Chairmanship of a good strong Sub- Committee on Economic Opportunities for our Negro citizens. Mr. Brodie Griffith of The Charlotte News has been Chairman of this Sub-Committee until last month when he asked to relieved of the Chairmanship (not membership on the committee) due to a very heavy schedule which he has during the spring. The membership of the committee, in addition to Mr. Griffith, is Mr. C. D. Spangler, Mr. Fred Alexander, Mr. Charles Lowe, Mr. I. D. Blumenthal and Mr. Paul Johanson. One new member was added at the last meeting, Mr. James Nelson of the Douglas Aircraft. Our four other Sub-Committees working under the overall Mayor§s Committee on Community Relations are: One on Health, one on Education, one on Housing and one on Crime. The purpose of the Sub-Committee on Economic Opportunities is to seek to explore areas of the city where employment opportunities suited to abilities and training might be opened to a good many of our young Negro men and women who must now leave the state to secure such employment. Such investigation as has been made of the matter is encouraging. I would believe that without much publicity it would be possible to encourage a number of our larger concerns in the city to add gradually to their employment rolls men and women from the Negro race. Already certain concerns have adopted this plan as has the city.

Series Description | This series consists of correspondence from and to the Reverend Dr. John R. Cunningham, chairman of both mayoral committees. |
Collection Description | Charlotte mayor (from 1957-1961) James Saxon Smith formed the Mayor's Friendly Relationship Committee (MFRC) in response to student organized sit-ins at lunch counters in some of uptown Charlotte's major white-owned establishments on February 12, 1960. By July 1960, the MFRC had helped the lunch counter owners and student protesters come to an agreement which resulted in the integration of many of Charlotte's lunch counters. The work of the committee continued and expanded to explore broader community issues, and was renamed the Mayor's Community Relations Committee (MCRC) in 1961. This collection comprises papers related to the establishment and work of both committees, and includes correspondence, committee minutes, memorandums, pamphlets, and research materials on the subject of race relationships. |
