My dear Mrs. Vinroot:
We were disappointed that you were unable to be with us
at the meeting of the Mayorfs Committee on Monday morning. I
understood the circumstances. It was really a most encouraging
and,to me, inspiring meeting. We had eleven members of our group
together. The paper, copy of which I enclose, was presented and,
after full discussion, was unanimously approved. To me the high
moment in the meeting was when we were ready to adjourn every
member of the group, including white and colored and the Mayor,
led in sincere prayer for God's blessing upon what we had attempted
to do.
The Negro students have given hearty approval to the
paper and, as I understand it, the merchants are accepting it and
plan to open the lunch counters within the next day or so. The
Sears store is delaying the action somewhat since they have not
up to this time integrated any of their stores. I am glad, however,
that the other seven merchants are going ahead whether Sears comes
in to the arrangement or not.
Thanking you for your assistance throughout these months,
and assuring you of my best wishes, I am
Sincerely,
J R Cunningham
