Description	Photo of Biddle University in Charlotte, NC [N. E. Paper & Stat’y Co., Specialty Printers, Ayer, Mass.; black & white; divided back; good] Biddle University was begun in 1867 to provide higher education for former slaves. First called Biddle Memorial Institute, the name changed to Biddle University in 1883. A catastrophic fire in 1921 left the university in dire economic straits. The widow of Johnson C. Smith, donated enough financial aid to get the school back on its feet. In 1922, the name was changed to Johnson C. Smith University. The school is located on Beatties Ford Road (changes name to West Trade Street close-by) The building on the right is Biddle Memorial Hall.
