Description
Black and white view of 401 West Trade Street and the United States Post Office in Charlotte , NC and the Shipp Monument . The monument was an obelisk of Winnsboro granite erected in honor of Charlottean , Lt . William Ewen Shipp (1861-98) who was killed in the Battle of Santiago in the Spanish-American War . A Spanish cannon can be seen in front of the Post Office . The cannon was captured by Americans in the Spanish-American War . The federal post office building was completed in 1891 . It was brick with terra cotta and white stone trim and had an 84-foot tower . Inside were marble columns , marble and tile floors with polished oak woodwork and blue marble baseboards along the corridors . The first floor served as a post office and the second floor housed a federal courtroom , and court and revenue offices . It was demolished in 1915 for a more modern facility to be built .
