Description
Hugh Torrance House and Store (circa 1779) [Illustration by Jack Boyte (’88)] The oldest standing store building in North Carolina , the Hugh Torrance House and Store is one of Mecklenburg's few remaining 18th century structures . Built by a local merchant and planter , Hugh Torrance , the log portion of the house was built c . 1779 with a storehouse addition c . 1787 and a Federal addition c . 1805 . Torrance's son , James operated a store at this site from 1805-1825 . It is located on Gilead Road in Huntersville , NC .
