About this collection

The collection primarily consists of newspaper clippings and letters collected by Frank O. Sherrill related to the decision to integrage the S&W Cafeteria chain. Sherrill was the co-founder of S&W Cafeteria, which, like many other restaurants in the South during the early 1960s, denied service to black patrons. By 1963, civil rights supporters had been pushing for the desegregation of public accommodations throughout the South for several years, and restaurants that remained segregated were facing pressure to integrate from the public and from civil rights organizations. S&W ultimately integrated in 1963.
