Officer Mark Farmer was on patrol for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police about 11:20 p.m. Wednesday when he spotted a Honda Accord swerving on Nations Ford Road. It looked like another drunken driver. Minutes later, it was no longer an ordinary night. After chasing the car, he fatally shot Windy Gail Thompson, a 32-year-old mother of two. Police say he did it because he feared for his life. But Thompson's family wonders. Thompson fled after Farmer tried to stop her, police say. Her car struck a road sign and later plowed into a utility pole. Farmer, 26, got out of his patrol car and leaned into Thompson's car through the passenger-side window to arrest her. She drove away, dragging the officer with her, police say. He told her to stop. She didn't. Farmer fired four shots at the Lancaster, S.C., native, police said. Police say they are investigating the shooting to determine whether Farmer was justified in shooting her. Police department guidelines allow officers to shoot to defend their own lives or to protect others from death or serious injury. Farmer could not be reached for comment Thursday. Police said they cannot divulge many of the details until their investigation is completed. It's unclear where Thompson was hit, why Farmer entered the car through the passenger side and how fast the 11/22/96 8:13 PM
